What are dental implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots which are placed into the jaw to replace natural teeth that are missing. The great thing about implants is how much they look and feel like real teeth. They make an excellent alternative to dentures. Dental implants can replace one tooth, or even a full set of teeth. As you can see in the illustration, the implant is the metal “root” that is inserted into the jaw bone. The artificial tooth, or “crown “is attached using an abutment. Sometimes, special clips, similar to press-studs on clothes, are used to hold a denture in place.

What are the advantages of dental implants?

  • Are firmly secured in the jaws and can withstand greater bite pressure than dentures, allowing you to enjoy your favourite foods safely.
  • Protect from cheeks becoming hollowed after tooth extraction.
  • Tend to be more comfortable than dentures.
  • Could prevent your gums from receding.
  • Are surrounded by your gum tissue, just like natural teeth.
  • Your dentist does not have to reshape or cut neighbouring teeth to insert the implant.
  • Can be taken care of just like natural teeth. Simply brush and floss as usual.
  • Prevent bone loss in the jaw, which in turn could reduce the risk of neighbouring teeth becoming loose.

Remember! Because an implant is just like a natural tooth, poor oral hygiene can affect it. Plaque and calculus can build up, leading to problems such as bleeding gum, infection and bone loss.

Am I suitable for a dental implant?

Talk to your dentist to agree on whether implants are the best solution for you. This is your decision and you should not feel obligated to go ahead. Below are some of the reasons why you may not be a suitable candidate.

  • Are you under 18? Your bones have not finished growing, therefore you will be advised to wait.
  • Do you smoke? Because smoking affects the healing process and can prevent the implant from blending in with the bone, heavy/regular smokers may not be good candidates.
  • Do you have sufficient jaw bone? Sometimes a patient has a bone loss and bone replacement techniques will need to be employed before your dentist can go ahead and insert the implant.
  • Do you have a medical condition? Certain illnesses such as diabetes can increase the risk of infection and delay healing of the implant site.

I want to go ahead. What now?

Diagnostic tests will be performed to check if you are suitable for implant surgery. These could include:

  • A dental examination
  • An X-ray
  • CT scans of your jaw
  • Photographs
  • Dental casts of your whole mouth
  • The appearance of your new artificial tooth will be based on the teeth you already have. This will ensure that the shape and colour is just right.

Will anything else stop me from being able to have dental implants?

Sometimes there are other problems that need to be fixed before your dentist can go ahead with the implant treatment. For example, you could have gum disease or tooth decay which needs to be diagnosed and treated first. With your dentist, talk over a personalised treatment plan and expected costs. If you are in the habit of grinding your teeth (Bruxism), you can still have dental implants, but you may need to have extra implants inserted or have the artificial teeth made out of stronger material. This will help to withstand the extra pressure and allow a longer life for the implant. You may also be fitted with a special mouth guard to wear when you sleep, since many people with Bruxism grind at night.

Will my new dental implant look and feel like the real thing?

In short, it is the next best thing! After surgery, chewing and biting will feel strange and it will take a while to get used to this. Aesthetically, not all implants produce results that are just like your real tooth that is missing. Discuss your expectations with your dentist in order to gain a realistic understanding of how the implant will look and feel. Some cases are more challenging than others.

How long will my implant last?

Patients who maintain excellent oral hygiene can consider their implant virtually permanent. However your dentist cannot guarantee that implant surgery is risk free. Around 1 implant in 20 fails to integrate with the jaw bone or starts to loosen over time. Factors that contribute to this include:

  • The strength and density of your bone.
  • The implant’s location. For example, at the back of your upper jaw, the bone is thinner and less dense than other areas. This means the case is more difficult.
  • Smoking.
  • Poor or irregular oral hygiene.

How much does the dental implant cost?

We believe is affordability and care, combined with quality dental treatments. The general cost of implant dentistry consists of implant fixture placement, at $1600 per fixture, and an implant crown for $2400 each. The price may vary depending on your individual case. During your consultation, we will provide you with a final quote.

While the initial costs may seem quite high, it is likely to be cheaper in the long run compared to other restorative efforts (such as bridges or dentures). Dental implants are long-lasting and one of the few methods that truly counteract the negative effects of tooth loss. Bridges and dentures may seem like a cheaper option but will incur further maintenance costs over time.
